# Roku, GrapheneOS, Denmark and the RTX 4090: four platform stories in one Daily Diff

Published: 2026-10-25

Four developer stories from one weekend: Roku finished moving its developer repositories from GitHub to GitLab without stating a reason and warns that a stale index serves old content without any error, GrapheneOS says around a dozen banking apps now permit it, Computerworld Denmark reports that the Danish digitalisation ministry quietly dropped its open source Office pilot, and a new GitHub repository claims about double the FP16 tensor throughput on an RTX 4090 while its own matrix multiplications show gains of 12 to 34 percent. Each story is attributed to its primary source, the Danish report is paywalled and was read only as headline and first paragraph, and the verdict is NEEDS REVIEW.

## What this video covers

- Roku's developer blog (October 15, 2026) says all developer resources moved from GitHub to GitLab; repository names are unchanged, so github.com/rokudev/<repo> became gitlab.com/rokudev/<repo>. The post gives no reason.
- Roku warns that a stale index does not raise an error and quietly serves outdated content: update git remotes, .gitmodules (then git submodule sync), crawler and raw-file URLs, and search your own repositories for rokudev. When checked on October 25, 53 of 58 rokudev repositories on GitHub were archived and the GitLab group listed 57 projects.
- GrapheneOS said on October 23 that around a dozen banking apps began specifically permitting it alongside a Google-approved OS, around 10 percent of banking apps are unavailable because they ban non-Google-approved operating systems, and many apps have memory corruption bugs and incorrect anti-tampering code that its per-app exploit protection compatibility mode works around.
- On tap to pay, GrapheneOS says Google Pay bans it and most banks delegate tap to pay to Google Pay, while Curve Pay, PayPal and many European banking apps permit it and the move of banks to Google Pay in Europe has largely stopped.
- Computerworld Denmark (October 20, 2026, paywalled) reports the Danish digitalisation ministry quietly dropped its much-discussed pilot of an open source alternative to Microsoft Office and names Collabora; no reason or date was confirmed. In July 2025 the ministry's minister had written that Denmark must never become so dependent on so few that it cannot act freely.
- The gpu-unlock-ada README reports RTX 4090 FP16 tensor throughput with FP32 accumulate rising from 165.6 to 331.6 TF/s in an instruction benchmark, but real cuBLAS matrix multiplies gained 12 to 34 percent (FP16) and 16 to 20 percent (BF16, two shapes) in single matched run pairs; one FP8 test moved 0.3 percent. It is third party code that changes a setting under the driver, so use a spare machine.
- Verdict: NEEDS REVIEW. Each story is a switch someone else holds.

## Questions and answers

### What did Roku move from GitHub to GitLab, and what do developers need to update?

Roku's developer blog, dated October 15, 2026, says it completed moving all developer resources, meaning the documentation, sample apps and tooling repositories, from GitHub to GitLab. Repository names are unchanged, so each repository keeps its name and only the host changes from GitHub to GitLab. Developers should update git remotes, .gitmodules and any crawler or index URLs, and search their own repositories for rokudev. The post gives no reason for the move.

### How many banking apps now allow GrapheneOS?

GrapheneOS said on October 23 that around a dozen banking apps began specifically permitting it alongside a Google-approved operating system. The project also says most banking apps already work and around 10 percent are unavailable because they ban any operating system Google has not approved. The post does not name the apps; a community list at privsec.dev tracks user reports.

### What did Denmark's digitalisation ministry do with its open source Office pilot?

Computerworld Denmark reported on October 20, 2026 that the ministry quietly dropped its much-discussed pilot of an open source alternative to Microsoft's Office suite, and its summary names Collabora. The article is paywalled, and the visible opening gives no reason or date. In July 2025 the Document Foundation had reported that the ministry was moving to LibreOffice, quoting the minister on avoiding dependence on a few suppliers.

### Does the RTX 4090 firmware unlock really double performance?

The doubling appears in an instruction benchmark. The gpu-unlock-ada README reports FP16 tensor throughput with FP32 accumulate of 165.6 TF/s stock and 331.6 TF/s unlocked. In real cuBLAS matrix multiplies it reports FP16 gains of 12 to 34 percent and BF16 gains of 16 to 20 percent at two shapes, from single matched run pairs on one desktop. One FP8 test moved 0.3 percent.

### What was The Daily Diff's verdict on these four stories?

The Daily Diff's verdict was NEEDS REVIEW. Niko's reason is that each story is a switch somebody else holds, so check which of them your own setup depends on. That means Roku repository URLs, banking apps on a custom phone OS, an office suite plan, and any third party GPU firmware code, which Niko suggests trying on a spare machine if at all.

## Transcript

### Why did Roku move its code to GitLab?

0:00 Roku just moved all of its developer code from GitHub to GitLab. The announcement tells you which links to update. It never says why. In this video, four stories. Why did Roku move its code? Which banks now let GrapheneOS in? What happened to Denmark's open source Office pilot? And is an unlocked RTX 4090 really twice as fast?

0:20 The fourth story has two numbers that disagree with each other. I will show both near the end. It's Sunday, October twenty fifth, and this is The Daily Diff. This is a roundup, so think of it as one pull request with four files and no tests. A TV maker's repositories, a phone operating system, a government's office suite and a graphics card's firmware. Each one is a small fight over who holds the switch.

### What did Roku move, and what breaks?

0:43 On October fifteenth, Roku's developer blog said it had finished moving its developer resources from GitHub to GitLab. That covers the documentation, the sample apps and the tools, including the open source parts of its SDK. The repository names stayed the same, so only the host in the address changes. When I checked, fifty-three of the fifty-eight repositories on GitHub were archived, which means read-only. The GitLab group lists fifty-seven projects.

1:09 The post gives no reason for the move. It does include the warning most people will skip. If an index, an internal assistant or a coding agent reads these repositories, a stale index does not raise an error. It quietly serves old content. The Hacker News thread passed two hundred comments, and the favourite question was the one the post skips. Some readers guessed at GitHub outages.

1:30 That is a guess, and Roku has not said. The fix is small. Point each existing clone at the new address with git remote set url. Update the dot gitmodules file and run git submodule sync. Then search your own repositories for the word rokudev. Doc fixes now go through a merge request, because the suggest edits button is not supported on GitLab.

### Which banking apps now allow GrapheneOS?

1:51 GrapheneOS posted late on Friday that around a dozen banking apps have begun to specifically permit it, alongside a Google-approved operating system. Most banking apps already work, the project says. Around ten percent are unavailable, because those apps ban any operating system Google has not approved. Here is the part I liked. For the apps that do run into trouble, GrapheneOS says many have memory

2:12 corruption bugs and incorrect anti-tampering code. That is why it ships a per-app switch, called exploit protection compatibility mode. So some of the most security-minded apps on your phone are tripping over their own memory bugs. A reader asked about tap to pay, and the project answered. Google Pay bans GrapheneOS, and most banks hand tap to pay over to Google Pay. In Europe, Curve Pay, PayPal and many European banking apps allow it, and GrapheneOS says the move to Google Pay there has largely stopped.

2:42 Last time GrapheneOS was on this show, on September nineteenth, the topic was Pixel support. If you ship a finance app, the community list at privsec dot dev is a crowd-sourced record of which apps work on GrapheneOS, so your app is probably already on it. It is worth reading what your users report.

### Why did Denmark shelve its Office pilot?

2:59 In July twenty twenty-five, Denmark's digitalisation ministry said it was testing open source in parallel, and the minister wrote that Denmark must never become so dependent on so few that it can no longer act freely. On October twentieth, Computerworld Denmark reported that the ministry has quietly dropped its much-discussed pilot of an open source alternative to Microsoft's Office suite. The article is behind a paywall, so I can only tell you what the headline and the first paragraph say.

3:27 The page names Collabora as the pilot. I could not confirm a reason, a date or what comes next, and I will not guess. A Hacker News reader asked whether the pilot was always a bargaining chip in a licensing negotiation. Nobody in that thread had evidence, so it stays a question. Compare the Dutch NixOS workplace from September twenty ninth, also a pilot with eight municipalities.

### Is the unlocked RTX 4090 really twice as fast?

3:48 Now the fourth story. A GitHub repository called gpu unlock ada appeared on October twenty third and already has about twenty one hundred stars. It is a Linux kernel module that sets a speed select override before the stock NVIDIA driver starts. The readme credits a payload analysed on Hugging Face and an earlier project that it forks. Here is the headline number.

4:09 On an RTX 4090 the readme measured sixteen bit float tensor math at about one hundred sixty six teraflops stock, and about three hundred thirty two after the unlock. Doubled. The bfloat sixteen format did the same. The people side is a relay race. The payload analysis came from a Hugging Face project, the Linux module is a fork of an earlier project, and a Windows port for one MSI card came from Latence dot app.

4:36 The readme says other Ada cards are unverified. Now the second number. In real cuBLAS matrix multiplies, the same readme reports sixteen bit float gains between twelve and thirty four percent. Bfloat sixteen gained sixteen to twenty percent at two shapes and barely moved at a large one. A single eight bit float test moved three tenths of a percent. The readme describes these as single run pairs that say little about whole

5:00 application speed. My advice is to treat this as third party code that changes a setting underneath your driver. If you try it at all, use a spare machine, and read the repository's own testing page first. If you'd rather read this than hear me say it, the diff lands in your inbox every morning, free at the daily diff dot dev, link below. So today's verdict is NEEDS REVIEW.

### What gets the NEEDS REVIEW stamp?

5:19 I'd review it because each of these is a switch somebody else holds, so check which of them your own setup depends on. Subscribe, hit the bell, and tell me in the comments if you'd have stamped it differently. And that's the diff for today. I'm Niko from Axrisi. Merge responsibly.
