Shopify bought Tailwind, then went back to native.
Two Shopify posts, 25 hours apart.
Two Shopify posts, 25 hours apart. Tuesday: Tailwind Labs joins Shopify — the framework stays MIT, but Tailwind Plus and ui.sh close to new customers, eight months after Adam Wathan wrote that AI had cut docs traffic 40% and 75% of the engineering team had been laid off. Wednesday: "Native is now the future of mobile at Shopify" — the 2020 headline with the word React deleted, because coding agents rebuilt the Shop app in Swift and Kotlin in 12 weeks; React Native Skia gets forked, FlashList (2M downloads a week) needs a steward, Restyle is archived. Also: DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, Automattic's board and Matt Mullenweg, Rust as a Tier-1 language at Microsoft, and OpenAI's training toggle. Verdict: NEEDS REVIEW.

0:00 On Tuesday, Shopify bought the CSS framework that styles ChatGPT, X and Cloudflare, a hundred and ten million installs a week, and on Wednesday it published a post titled Native is now the future of mobile at Shopify, which is its 2020 post with one word deleted, so the acquisition came with a diff. Two announcements, twenty-five hours apart. Tuesday morning, Adam Wathan: Tailwind Labs is joining Shopify; eleven hundred points on Hacker News.
0:22 Wednesday afternoon, Mustafa Ali: Shopify is rewriting every mobile app in Swift and Kotlin because coding agents made building twice cheap. Also Wednesday: DeepSeek shipped a Flash model twice the size of the old Flash, Automattic's board put Matt Mullenweg on leave fifty minutes after sending him the paperwork, and Microsoft declared Rust a tier-one language on a WordPress site that promptly went down. In this video: what AI did to Tailwind's business, what it did to Shopify's mobile bet, who is left holding two million weekly downloads,
0:51 and a Flash model that isn't. It's Thursday, September 10th, and this is The Daily Diff. Tailwind first. Nine years old, extracted from a hosted checkout product Wathan was building in 2017, now installed over a hundred and ten million times a week. The post says nothing changes: MIT forever, same team. Then, on the commercial side: Tailwind Plus and ui.sh are closed to new customers, effective immediately, a new kind of sunset where the product survives and the sign-up button doesn't.
1:19 Why sell? Scroll to January. On a GitHub pull request about LLM-friendly docs, Wathan wrote that seventy-five percent of the engineering team had been laid off the day before, because traffic to the docs was down forty percent since 2023 while Tailwind was more popular than ever. The docs were the only funnel to the paid products, and the humans stopped reading them, because the model already had. Everyone read the license; it said MIT; nobody paid.
1:45 Now the Wednesday post. In January 2020, Shopify said React Native was the future of mobile. In January 2025, the future of React Native was bright. In September 2026, the 2020 assumption changed: with agents, building a feature twice, in Swift and Kotlin, no longer costs twice. Their proof is the Shop app, rebuilt from scratch and in the app stores in twelve weeks: Android startup down fifty percent, the APK a hundred and nine megabytes lighter, crashes down ten x, by Shopify's own numbers,
2:15 which are slide-deck benchmarks, but honest ones, since the only company they beat is Shopify. Next is the Shopify app: three hundred screens, widgets, a watch app, later this year. The method is a system called Helix, because pointing an agent at a React Native codebase and asking for Swift produces, quote, a huge amount of unmaintainable code, so instead the agent proposes checkpoints, and each must pass tests,
2:36 a visual review, two adversarial AI reviewers and a human nod before the next begins. The top Hacker News question, to nobody's surprise: cool story, what's the token spend? The post does not say, which in 2026 is the number. The fallout. React Native Skia: sponsored through the end of the year, then William Candillon forks it under a new name and the original is archived. FlashList, about two million downloads a week: Shopify will fix critical breakage and is, quote, in discussions with several companies about long-term
3:03 stewardship; if interested, message Mustafa on X. Restyle: archived. So, the irony: AI took Tailwind's customers, and AI convinced Shopify to delete the word React from its own headline. Shopify bought the casualty on Tuesday and used the same weapon on Wednesday, and both posts are correct. Wathan calls it poetic; the React Native community picked a different word. DeepSeek. V4.1 Flash: five hundred fifty-two billion parameters, twice the previous Flash, though only eight billion are active on prefill and
3:32 sixteen on decode, with a one-million-token context and a KV cache of eight hundred ninety bytes per token. Price, off-peak: fifteen cents in, sixty cents out per million tokens, a third of a cent on a cache hit, and from September 14th every request to V4 Pro is rerouted to Flash and billed at Flash rates, the first downgrade in history that saves you money. On the slide-deck benchmarks, which are undefeated, it beats Opus on
3:56 Terminal-Bench 2.1, 90.6 to 89.1; on Terminal-Bench 3.0 the same table says 30 to 43, so it wins on last year's exam. Hacker News, on the name: at 552 billion it isn't really Flash anymore. It's more of a rumble. Quick hits. Automattic's board voted Matt Mullenweg onto paid leave; he told the whole company in Slack that the CFO conspired with three directors, that he got the resolution fifty minutes before the meeting, and that he voted against it, which is how you learn you were never the
4:24 majority. Microsoft: Rust is Tier-1, next to C++ and C#, with its own MSVC backend in over a hundred internal repos. And a Tell HN at three hundred forty points: OpenAI keeps re-enabling the allow-training toggle for people who turned it off. The thread's fix is Advanced Account Security, which locks it, so the switch that protects your data is protected by a different switch. 4:51 So — today's verdict on Shopify's week: needs review. Tailwind got a home and stays MIT, and a company that rewrites its own 2020 headline in public is doing engineering. But the rewrite shipped without a bill, and two million weekly downloads got a DM me. And that's the diff for today. I'm Niko from Axrisi. Merge responsibly.
